Some more ideas.
Seriously consider using SMF ( http://www.simplemachines.org/ ) instead of phpBB, I found it's a much more mature software, easier to use and with a really helpful community. You can try both and decide. Shameless plug: here's my forum using SMF with a neat theme: http://www.exitosocial.com/foro . If you have questions relating SMF I can try and do my best to help.
Also I have a couple suggestions about the aesthetics of the site. Black over white is neat and clean but IMO it lacks some punch. There's a zillion great wordpress themes around. Oh and now that we're at it, remove the “main1″ part of the URL. Just drop it or change it to something more meaningful like “articles”, “blog” or smthg. This is for SEO effect.
Also, as this is a collaboration site, and the articles are written by a variety of authors, maybe a more prominent display of the author and/or its avatar in the front page and the article could be nice. Also, when clicking on an author's name, you could display a list of his posts.
You can add a bit of spice to any article by searching for a flickr free picture. There are many pictures in flickr that are under a creative-commons license. Here's a handy URL that will allow you to directly search for creative-commons licensed pics on flickr, just change the search terms for whatever you want:
http://www.flickr.com/search/?z=t&l=cc&ct=6&q=real+modern+man&m=text
And now, all together! Let me please show you an example of all above put together, here's an article translated from Franco (with due permission) in my website, displaying blurb of author with short bio, avatar and link to list of author's posts, and displaying a creative-commons flickr image:

There's a lot of tricks from my bag
I hope they're useful!
